Our Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is delivered mostly through an integrated project approach with cross curricular themes. Each project begins with a ‘hook’, an activity which engages pupil interest (an educational visit, a play, a mystery, etc ) and unlock prior learning, and ends with an outcome where children display their new understanding of knowledge and skills. Sequences of lessons within a project build and embed knowledge to support children in learning and knowing more. Outcomes are carefully crafted to communicate this - they can take the shape of presentations, enterprise, teaching other learners or celebrating with our Shirley community. The final project undertaken as a Shirley Junior learner is 'It's a Wrap' - this is an outcome in itself in which children demonstrate all of their personal skills, knowledge and learning skills learned from across the curriculum to deliver all aspects of their end of year production. 

Projects have subject 'drivers' or approaches which the majority of learning links to. Wider subjects are then chosen and sequenced to compliment and deepen children's understanding of key themes.

Driving Subject: Science Design Technology History Geography Reading

 

Some subjects continue to be taught discreetly, (EG Maths, PE, French and RE) through progressive units of work, when these do not fit appropriately within the project.

The school recognises the importance of parental support in children’s learning and staff actively encourage parents to become regularly involved in this. Support for parents is provided through curriculum workshops, curriculum newsletters, communication through children’s planners and one to one parent meetings.
