What our parents say

Governors response to Parent Survey March 2023

The school governors were grateful to those of you who completed the Parent Survey in January 2023.  We have considered all responses and overall were extremely pleased.

Below is a summary of the questions and responses

Behaviour and Safety

My child is happy at school …………………….88% agree

My child feels safe at school……………………90% agree

My child is well looked after…………………….87% agree

School makes sure pupils are well behaved….73% agree

School deals effectively with bullying…………..78% agree  (this has increased since the last survey)

We as Governors are proud that Shirley Junior School is an inclusive school where children develop their ability to regulate their emotional responses. This takes time, practice and understanding. The school recognise that behaviour needs to be taught, and they believe in creating space in the curriculum to do this.

When incidents occur, children are helped to reflect on the impact of their actions and think about how they might have responded in a more helpful way, while still feeling safe in the knowledge that they are accepted for who they are, valued and cared for. The school fosters the belief that making mistakes is normal, it is how they repair and rebuild from them that matters.

On the rare occasion when a pupil displays extreme behaviour often in moments of crisis or distress, all staff are committed to responding predictably, promptly, assertively and in a way that helps the child develop their regulation skills. While there is minimal disruption to other pupils' learning, not every behaviour can be anticipated.

Teaching and Learning

My child makes good progress…………………81% agree

My child is taught well……………………………86% agree

My child receives appropriate homework………78% agree (this has increased since the last survey)

The governors’ recognise the challenges  that the school has ensuring pupils catch up following COVID. Evidence from governors and HAMWIC visits shows the curriculum design and quality of teaching in the school is strong and that children make good progress in their time here.

Leadership and Management

School is well led and managed………………..79% agree

Would you recommend the school ……………88% agree

The governors feel that the leadership team is strong and effective. They support the development of their staff while holding them to account for the safety, wellbeing and progress of every child.

Communication

School responds well to any concerns raised…69% agree -

I receive valuable information about my child’s progress …….. 65% agree

Governors believe the school has robust communication measures and an informative website in line with other schools, offering two parents’ evenings and a progress report every year, as well as giving parents regular opportunities to come into school every half term to share their child’s learning.

We have asked the school leaders to explore these areas with parents to find out more, so that the way the school communicates is supportive of the community.
